The marketing of food directly to children exploded with the advent of television – especially saturday morning cartoons – check out these bits from a 1961 Bugs Bunny and Friends show where Bugs and his friends sell Post cereals, Tang juice crystals and more… Be sure to really pay attention to the dialogue – when Bugs tell children directly to ask their parents (the ultimate nag factor) for Tang at breakfast! Broadcasters in Québec have been excluded in large part from this trend by a very progressive piece of legislation passed in the 1970′s limiting direct marketing to young children.
